I came across this article when discussing with my six year old why we kill animals. She asked in reference to my brother shooting a moose, which I then told her would feed him, Nanny, Poppy and a whole bunch of other friends and family for quite some time.

As a kid/teen my diet consisted quite heavily of fish, game, berries and vegetables hunted, gathered and raised by each of my family according to our own abilities and age. When I came home with food, either snared rabbit, jigged codfish, or a gallon of picked blueberries I knew I was contributing to our table.

I felt neither guilt nor sick enjoyment when I swiftly dispatched the rabbit with a hit to the back of the neck, nor when I skinned it, nor when I ate every consumable part of it including its head and organs. I did however share in the anger and disgust felt by friends and family if any animal (wild or domesticated) needlessly suffered for perverse pleasure.

As an adult I now live in the city and have far less opportunity to carry on with this way of life. I now struggle with educating my children about what was for me a life of respect and close relationship with life and death and now must discover how to teach my children what has been known by humanity from the beginning but somehow replaced with the lies and hypocrisy of the modern world. A world where food somehow has been deprived of its life. One where the chicken, beef and pork were never alive but rather produced in some magical protein replicator, complete with hormones and dyes, wrapped in plastic and spread onto an absorbent pad and styro tray.

What is our country coming too when we view hunting as bad. How do you think our forefathers provided for their families. Teaching a 12 yr old to shoot isn't bad. Look at your statistics. Kids who hunt are less likely to get in trouble and more likely to be well rounded individuals. I just don't understand the critics. My kids hunt, my husband hunted with his dad, and I hunted with mine and I just don't see how I am hurting anyone by doing this, My children have pride in hunting and they appreciate it far more than the children who sit in front of video games all day.

very nice article sir.

first I would like to say how informational the article was. I'm in a relationship with woman I hope to one day call my wife. She has a little boy from a previous relationship. I plan on teaching him on the wonderful world of hunting real soon. Although his mother never hunted or held a gun in her life and is a little worried. But with this article and a few others I have found it will help her understand better on why I'm so eager to teach him. And to all the anti hunters reading this.God gave us the authority over animals, and for centuries humans haved survived by hunting. And without hunting we would have overpopulation of animals and o lot of en-breeding,which would devastate our ecosystem. So give that a quick thinking over before you open your mouths next time.

Good job on teaching the next generation hunting the proper way. Hunting shows are great for ideas but horrible for why they hunt. But hunting for food is always noble. Ignore the uneducated who think it’s more humane to herd the animals into a pen to put t a bullet in their head after living a life stuck in a fence.

To raise a child to learn to provide for themselves is never a bad thing. We can't let our society become so dependent on others to provide food for us. Give a hungry person food and he is no longer hungry for a day, teach him to hunt/farm and he will never be hungry again!
